Assam Floods: Toll Reaches 87, Over 1.28 Lakh Affected Across Seven Districts

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Monday reported two fresh fatalities, raising the state's flood-related death toll to 87. The deaths occurred in Sivasagar district, which remains the worst affected by the ongoing deluge. More than 1.28 lakh people across seven districts are still reeling under the impact of the floods, which have submerged hundreds of villages and damaged vast areas of crop land.

According to the official bulletin issued on August 3, 2026, the affected districts are Charaideo, Sivasagar, Dhemaji, Golaghat, Biswanath, Jorhat, and Lakhimpur. These districts, located in the upper Brahmaputra region, have experienced heavy rainfall over the past fortnight, causing rivers to overflow and inundate low-lying areas. A total of 380 villages are currently under water, and 14,230.148 hectares of agricultural land have been affected.

The number of affected people is estimated at 1,28,071. Among these, Sivasagar accounts for the highest number with 55,200 people, followed by Charaideo with 34,050 and Jorhat with 20,209. The figures reflect a marginal decrease from Sunday, when over 1.35 lakh people were affected across five districts, indicating a slight improvement in the situation.

Relief operations are in full swing, with the administration running 38 relief camps that are currently sheltering 11,066 displaced individuals. Additionally, 17 relief distribution centres are operational to ensure that essential supplies, including food and clean drinking water, reach the affected population. The district administrations have also set up medical camps to prevent the outbreak of waterborne diseases, which are common in flood-affected areas.

The Dhansiri river is flowing above the danger level at Numaligarh in Golaghat district, prompting authorities to caution residents in nearby villages. Monitoring stations have been put on alert, and officials are keeping a close watch on water levels in other rivers as well.

Assam, which lies in the flood-prone Brahmaputra valley, has witnessed devastating floods almost every year. This year's floods have already claimed 87 lives, affecting thousands of families and their livelihoods. The inundation of crop fields has been a major setback for farmers, who depend heavily on agriculture during the monsoon season.

The state government, in coordination with the ASDMA, is working to provide timely assistance to those affected by the floods. Officials have appealed to the public to stay vigilant and follow the instructions of the disaster management authorities. Relief and rescue personnel have been deployed to assist in evacuation from marooned areas, and efforts are underway to restore normalcy.

With weather forecasts predicting further rainfall in parts of Assam, the administration remains on high alert. The immediate priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected people, and to begin the long process of recovery and rehabilitation once the waters recede.

Experts have underscored the need for sustained investment in flood management infrastructure and disaster preparedness measures to mitigate the impact of such recurring calamities. However, focused efforts are now directed at responding to the immediate crisis and supporting the affected communities.
