Panama-Flagged Ship Attacked by Drone in Black Sea: 1 Dead, 2 Injured

A drone attack on a Panama-flagged commercial vessel in the Black Sea has resulted in the death of one crew member and injuries to two others, according to the Panama Maritime Authority (AMP).

The AMP reported on Friday (June 19, 2026) that the attack occurred on Thursday (June 18, 2026). One of the injured sailors is in serious condition, but the ship was able to continue its voyage.

The authority stated it has "activated the relevant protocols to gather official information on the incident and maintains communication with the parties involved." The AMP did not specify the origin of the drone attack, but advised ships to avoid transiting through Ukrainian and Russian waters in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov to the north.

Panama operates the world's largest ship registry, with approximately 16% of the global merchant fleet sailing under its flag. This incident adds to the growing number of attacks on commercial shipping in the Black Sea region amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Both nations have targeted vessels in the area, raising safety concerns for international maritime trade.

Since the escalation of the Russia-Ukraine war in February 2022, the Black Sea has become a hotspot for maritime attacks, including drone and missile strikes on commercial vessels. Ukraine and Russia have both accused each other of targeting civilian shipping. The international community has repeatedly called for safe passage for merchant ships.

The Panama flag is widely used due to open registry policies, and incidents involving Panama-flagged ships are common. The AMP's advisory against entering Ukrainian and Russian waters reflects the heightened danger in the region.

No group has claimed responsibility for this attack. Maritime security experts warn that such incidents threaten global supply chains, particularly grain and oil exports from the region.
