India, Vietnam Look to Expand Air Defence Cooperation as IAF Chief Visits Hanoi
Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh, Chief of the Air Staff, on Monday (August 3, 2026) began a three-day official visit to Vietnam, with a focus on strengthening bilateral defence ties and expanding military cooperation, particularly in the air domain.
Upon arrival in Hanoi, Air Chief Marshal Singh met India’s Ambassador to Vietnam, Tshering W. Sherpa, who briefed him on the evolving India-Vietnam bilateral relationship ahead of his official engagements. The Indian Air Force (IAF) chief was later accorded a ceremonial welcome by the Air Defence–Air Force Service of the Vietnam People’s Army, reflecting the warmth and significance of the visit.
During the visit, Air Chief Marshal Singh held bilateral talks with Lieutenant-General Vu Hong Son, Commander of the Air Defence–Air Force Service. The two sides reviewed the progress of ongoing defence cooperation and explored new avenues to enhance collaboration in the air domain, as part of efforts to further strengthen the existing bilateral partnership.
The visit underscores the shared commitment of India and Vietnam to deepen their comprehensive strategic partnership and reinforce defence cooperation amid growing strategic convergence in the Indo-Pacific region. Both countries have consistently supported each other on issues of core concern and have worked closely on maritime security, capacity building, and counterterrorism.
India and Vietnam have a long history of friendly relations, rooted in shared cultural and civilisational links. Over the past decade, the relationship has evolved into a comprehensive strategic partnership, with defence and security cooperation emerging as a key pillar. In a recent statement, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh confirmed that India has signed a BrahMos supersonic cruise missile deal with Vietnam, a significant milestone in defence cooperation. The deal is expected to enhance Vietnam’s maritime and coastal defence capabilities, reflecting India’s willingness to support friendly nations in the Indo-Pacific region.
The IAF chief’s visit is seen as part of a broader effort to expand military-to-military engagement and explore opportunities for joint training, interoperability, and transfer of defence technology. Vietnam has been an important partner for India in the region, and both nations share common interests in ensuring a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific.
