Pakistan, Iran Hold High-Level Talks on Reopening Strait of Hormuz, Ending Conflict

Pakistan's Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, accompanied by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, concluded a day-long visit to Tehran on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, for discussions with Iranian leaders on de-escalating the West Asia conflict and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The visit is part of Islamabad's diplomatic push to revive stalled peace negotiations between the United States and Iran, according to a statement from Pakistan's Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

The ISPR said the discussions were “comprehensive” and focused on “measures to prevent further escalation, reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and expedited termination of the conflict.” The Pakistani delegation held meetings with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Mohsen Rezaei (Representative of the Supreme Leader on the Supreme National Security Council), Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, and Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni.

The Strait of Hormuz, a 55-km-wide waterway between Iran and Oman, is a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments. Before the conflict began on February 28, approximately one-fifth of the world's oil passed through it. The waterway has seen severe disruptions since the start of hostilities, with Iran threatening to target unauthorised tankers attempting to transit.

The conflict traces back to February 28, when the United States and Israel launched strikes against Iran, triggering Iranian retaliation and the closing of the strait to regular traffic. This led to a spike in global petroleum prices. In April, a ceasefire agreement was announced with Pakistan as a guarantor, but the peace process faltered, and tensions escalated again last month as both sides resumed military strikes.

Pakistan’s leadership has been actively mediating, seeking to break the deadlock and achieve a negotiated settlement. The Iranian leadership appreciated Pakistan's “constructive role” in facilitating dialogue, de-escalation, and a peaceful resolution, the ISPR statement said. The discussions also covered broader regional peace and ways to address the underlying disputes.

The visit comes as Washington tightens sanctions against Iran, with U.S. officials saying the measures are aimed at cutting off Tehran's economic lifeline. U.S. President Donald Trump has warned of economic consequences for countries providing, in his words, “any type of lifeline” to Iran, intensifying pressure on Tehran.

Observers note that Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts are complicated by these external pressures, yet Islamabad has continued to push for dialogue. The ISPR statement emphasised that the visit was “part of Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to end the stalemate in the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict and explore ways for achieving enduring peace and a permanent end to instability in the region.”

The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz remains a key demand from global markets, as prolonged disruption has affected energy supplies and heightened economic uncertainty. While no concrete outcomes were announced from the talks, both sides expressed a shared interest in stability and a negotiated end to hostilities.

The visit underscores Pakistan's role as a regional mediator, though previous attempts to revive the peace process have not yet succeeded. The situation remains fluid, with international attention focused on any signs of progress toward reopening the strait and restoring calm in West Asia.
