Omar Abdullah and LG Sinha Present Divergent Views on J&K to Parliamentary Panel
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha met the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, led by MP Shashi Tharoor, during the committee's four-day visit to the Union Territory. Both presented contrasting assessments of the region's current state.
Omar Abdullah, in a statement after the meeting, called for sustained engagement to understand the aspirations, challenges and developmental priorities of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He described the interaction as productive and emphasised the need for the committee to continue its dialogue with local stakeholders.
The meeting comes days after Shashi Tharoor's remarks on the return of normalcy in J&K drew sharp reactions from both the ruling National Conference and Congress leaders. Tharoor had earlier commented on the improved situation, which some local leaders interpreted as endorsing the post-August 2019 changes.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, in his interaction with the committee, highlighted what he described as a remarkable transformation after August 2019. He noted significant improvement in the security environment and renewed optimism among the people, adding that normal life now flows uninterrupted across the Union Territory and that aspirations are soaring.
Sinha also briefed the committee on various infrastructure and development projects being implemented, which he said are contributing to economic growth and improving the quality of life. The committee members were apprised of the socio-economic transformation over the past six years.
Shashi Tharoor separately met the Lieutenant Governor at Lok Bhavan in Srinagar for the second time since his arrival, discussing the committee's engagements and meetings held during the visit.
