Odisha Unveils New Policies to Boost Blue Economy from its 575-km Coastline
The Odisha government has approved dedicated policies aimed at harnessing the economic potential of its 575-kilometre coastline. These initiatives are designed to promote deep-sea fishing and allow white leg shrimp culture beyond the jurisdiction of the Coastal Aquaculture Authority, aligning with the state's vision of accelerating blue-economy-led growth.
The marine fishing population in Odisha is estimated to be around 15 lakh, distributed across more than 800 villages. Despite this, fishing operations have largely been confined to near-shore waters, increasing pressure on coastal fishery resources. According to Odisha Chief Secretary Anu Garg, scientific assessments have indicated significant untapped offshore and deep-sea fishery resources that could be exploited sustainably.
The new policies aim to shift focus from coastal waters to deeper seas, reducing overfishing inshore while opening up new economic opportunities. The shrimp culture expansion is expected to boost aquaculture exports and generate employment. The government plans to provide support infrastructure, including harbour upgrades and cold storage facilities, to facilitate these activities.
Environmental safeguards will be incorporated to ensure sustainable practices. The state hopes these measures will enhance livelihoods for coastal communities and contribute to the overall economic development of Odisha.
