Nvidia and Wall Street giants raise $500bn for AI infrastructure push

Nvidia, the American chipmaker, has announced a partnership with several of Wall Street's largest financial institutions to raise $500 billion (approximately £370 billion) for artificial intelligence infrastructure. The initiative brings together Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs, and KKR, marking the first time that AI hardware and infrastructure—often referred to as 'compute'—is being treated as a distinct asset class by these investors.

In a statement, Nvidia's chief executive Jensen Huang emphasised the growing importance of computing power in the AI sector. 'In AI, compute is revenue,' he said. 'We are bringing the world's leading long-term capital providers together to independently underwrite AI infrastructure.' The financing will be directed towards Nvidia's own projects as well as those developed by its partners.

The infrastructure projects supported by this fund are expected to include the construction of new data centres designed to house, operate, and cool extensive arrays of computer chips that process AI data and actions. Additionally, the funding will back new factories to manufacture the AI chips needed to power these systems, with the goal of increasing their availability to buyers worldwide.

Executives from KKR, Joe Bae and Scott Nuttall, offered their perspective in a joint statement. 'Compute has become a critical infrastructure asset,' they said. 'As we've scaled our approach to digital infrastructure, we've learned that delivery, not ambition, is the hard part.'

Nvidia's graphics processing units (GPUs) are used by nearly every major technology and AI company to power their services, AI platforms, and chatbots. This central role makes the company a key player in the ongoing expansion of AI capabilities.

However, some analysts have voiced caution. Jane Sydenham, a senior investment manager at Rathbones, told the BBC: 'Nvidia is absolutely enormous and produces these chips that everybody needs for AI and it needs to keep facilitating the growth of AI.' Yet she added: 'The worry is that more and more money is going into these projects. Are they all going to earn the right return for the future?'

The $500 billion initiative underscores the scale of investment flowing into AI infrastructure, a sector that continues to attract significant interest from both public and private capital markets. While the potential for growth is substantial, the question of long-term profitability remains a topic of debate among industry observers.
