NEET-UG aspirant dies after fall in Indore; police probe under way

A 21-year-old woman preparing for the NEET-UG medical entrance exam died after falling from a building in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, on Thursday night. Police have launched an investigation into the incident, which they described as 'suspicious'.

According to police, Avantika Maurya fell from the third floor of a building in Dhakad colony around 11:30 p.m. on June 18, 2026. Her father, Banshi Lal Maurya, took her to a private hospital, where she succumbed to injuries at 5:20 a.m. the next morning. The police have initiated inquest proceedings and are questioning family and friends.

While authorities have not confirmed the cause of death, the family has alleged that Avantika died by suicide due to stress from repeated exam failures. She had attempted the NEET-UG three times and was scheduled for a fourth attempt on June 21. Her father reportedly told Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari that she had been depressed and stopped eating or talking in recent days.

Patwari, sharing an audio of the conversation on social media, accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of responsibility, calling it a 'murder by the corrupt system' and demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Patwari’s statements are his personal views and have not been verified.

The incident has sparked debate about exam-related stress. If you or someone you know is in distress, helplines such as KIRAN (1800-599-0019) and Arogya Sahayavani (104) are available 24/7.
