21 Bangladesh nationals detained in J&K's Ramban; probe into support network under way
JAMMU: At least 21 nationals of Bangladesh, including four women and seven minors, have been detained in Jammu and Kashmir's Ramban district, authorities said on Monday. The group was stopped during a vehicle checking drive in Banihal on August 1.
Officials said the detainees, aged between two and 38 years, were travelling in two vehicles towards Kashmir. Due to rain-triggered landslides and mudslides, movement of non-essential vehicles on the route has been restricted, except those associated with the Amarnath Yatra convoys.
According to an official source, none of the detained persons could produce valid identity or travel documents establishing their lawful entry into, or presence within, Indian territory. During preliminary questioning, the group reportedly said they had crossed the international border and entered India through Assam, from where they travelled by train to Jammu. They stated they were heading to Kashmir in search of employment.
Investigators are examining whether any local or interstate network helped facilitate their movement into the Union Territory. Further questioning is underway to ascertain the routes, contacts, and any persons or organisations involved in arranging their travel.
The detention comes amid heightened security checks in the region following recent weather-related disruptions and ongoing monitoring of unauthorised movement. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether formal charges will be filed or what legal provisions may apply in this case.
