Mumbai Red Alert: IMD Warns of 48 More Hours of Torrential Rain

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad districts on July 6, warning of intense rainfall over the next 48 hours. The alert, part of a broader forecast for the Konkan region, comes after three days of continuous downpour that has caused waterlogging, flooding, and landslides in parts of western India.

According to the IMD, gusty winds reaching speeds of 70-80 kmph are expected on July 6. Day temperatures are likely to remain around 27 degrees Celsius, with minimum temperatures near 23 degrees Celsius. The weather department also placed Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg under an orange alert for July 6, with heavy rainfall predicted.

On July 7, the alert level will escalate for Raigad and Ratnagiri, where a red alert has been issued as rainfall is expected to intensify. The weather is forecast to gradually ease from July 8, with moderate rain expected across most parts of the Konkan region.

In Delhi, the IMD has also forecast thunderstorms and gusty winds, with wet conditions likely to persist. However, the primary concern remains the heavy rainfall along Maharashtra's coast, where authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and avoid low-lying areas.

The monsoon season in India typically brings heavy rains from June to September, often leading to flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas. The IMD's colour-coded warnings — red indicating severe weather, orange for heavy rain, and yellow for moderate rain — help authorities and the public prepare for potential disruptions.
