Tamil Nadu: DVAC conducts searches at 51 EB offices over conductor purchase

The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) on Wednesday conducted searches at 51 locations across Tamil Nadu, including office premises of electricity board officials. The operation is linked to a previously registered case concerning the procurement of aluminium conductors, a senior DVAC officer confirmed.

The searches were carried out simultaneously at multiple districts, with teams of investigators inspecting records, files, and digital devices. Officials stated that the action is part of an ongoing inquiry into alleged irregularities in the purchase of aluminium conductors, a key component in power transmission infrastructure. The case was registered earlier this year, and the searches are aimed at gathering further evidence.

The DVAC, an independent anti-corruption agency under the Tamil Nadu government, is tasked with investigating allegations of corruption, misconduct, and disproportionate assets against public servants. Its jurisdiction includes state government departments, local bodies, and public sector undertakings, including the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB).

Sources familiar with the matter said that the searches were focused on officials involved in the tendering and procurement processes. However, no official statement has been issued about the specific individuals or the nature of the irregularities alleged. The DVAC officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, declined to provide details, citing the sensitive nature of the investigation.

This development comes against the backdrop of growing scrutiny of infrastructure procurement in the state. Aluminium conductors are used extensively in power distribution networks, and their purchase involves substantial public funds. Any procedural lapses or collusion in such contracts can lead to significant financial losses to the exchequer.

The searches are expected to continue through the day, with teams documenting evidence and preparing reports. After completion, the DVAC is likely to issue a formal statement. Legal experts note that the outcome of the investigation will depend on the evidence collected and the cooperation of the officials concerned. As per standard procedure, those found to be involved may be summoned for questioning, and further action will follow based on the findings.

Residents and civil society groups in Tamil Nadu have often called for transparent and accountable governance. Anti-corruption drives, such as this one, are part of the state's efforts to ensure that public officials are held to the highest standards of integrity. However, the DVAC has also faced criticism in the past for selective or delayed action. The current operation, covering 51 locations in a single day, is notable for its scale and suggests a coordinated effort.

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, which manages the state's power generation and distribution, has not yet responded to the searches. Employees at the affected offices were reported to have cooperated with the investigating teams. Meanwhile, opposition parties have begun to question the government's handling of the issue, though no official political statement has been made.

This case serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in public procurement. As the investigation unfolds, the DVAC's findings will be crucial in determining whether any wrongdoing occurred. Until then, all parties involved are presumed innocent under the law.

The searches are being conducted under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The DVAC is expected to submit a detailed report to the appropriate authorities in due course.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
