Meghalaya Landslide Severs Key Route to Dawki as Heavy Rains Batter Northeast
Heavy monsoon rains have triggered multiple landslides across Northeast India, cutting off a major tourist destination in Meghalaya. The main road connecting state capital Shillong to Dawki, a popular tourist spot near the Bangladesh border, was completely blocked after a landslide on Sunday.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded very heavy rainfall on Sunday, with Mawsynram in East Khasi Hills receiving 526.5 mm, the highest in the state. Other stations such as RKM Sohra (470.4 mm) and Mawkywrat (385 mm) also recorded extremely high precipitation.
The IMD has forecast moderate rainfall across most parts of Meghalaya over the next four days, with the possibility of thunderstorms and heavy rain at isolated places. Authorities have warned of waterlogging in low-lying areas, severe disruption on major travel routes, and potential long-term disruption to municipal services.
Neighbouring Manipur also witnessed landslides due to the persistent rains. The region remains on alert as monsoon activity continues to be intense.
