Mbappe Scores Twice as France Beat Sweden 3-0 to Reach World Cup Last 16

France secured their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 round of 16 with a 3-0 victory over Sweden on Tuesday, June 30, in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The scoreline did not fully reflect France's dominance, as they created numerous chances that hit the woodwork or narrowly missed.

Kylian Mbappe was the standout performer, scoring two goals to take his World Cup finals tally to 18, one behind Lionel Messi on the all-time list. His first goal came in the 45th minute, a right-foot shot from a pass by Ousmane Dembele. The duo have combined for six goals at World Cup finals, a tournament record. Mbappe's second goal arrived in the 73rd minute, set up by Michael Olise.

Bradley Barcola scored France's second goal in the 53rd minute, lofting the ball over the Swedish goalkeeper. France's attacking display was sharp and precise throughout, leaving Sweden chasing the play and visibly fatigued.

The match featured a hydration break in the first half, which drew boos from the crowd, a common reaction from fans unhappy with the interruption. However, the break was arguably justified given the heat, with temperatures reaching 32 degrees Celsius on the pitch.

France's coach Didier Deschamps returned to the touchline after attending his mother's funeral, and Mbappe embraced him after scoring the opening goal. Mbappe was substituted in the 84th minute to a standing ovation.

France will now face Paraguay in the last 16, a match that promises to be challenging given France's current form.
