Massive Fire at Fireworks Unit in Virudhunagar, No Casualties Reported
A major fire broke out at a fireworks manufacturing unit in Sevalpatti village, falling under Vembakottai police station limits in Virudhunagar district on Sunday evening. The blaze, which started around 5:30 p.m., continued to rage for over two hours due to repeated explosions of stored chemicals and finished goods.
According to police officials, several working sheds were completely destroyed. Despite the intensity of the fire, no casualties have been reported so far. Initial reports indicate that workers managed to evacuate the premises safely before the explosions intensified.
Two fire tenders were deployed to the site but had to wait for the explosions to subside before initiating firefighting operations. The fire was largely brought under control by 8 p.m., though small explosions continued intermittently.
The exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine whether it was an accident or resulted from a safety violation. The fireworks unit, like many in the region, handles highly inflammable materials, and such incidents highlight the risks associated with the industry in Tamil Nadu.
Local residents reported hearing loud blasts that shook nearby homes. Panic spread in the area, but no injuries have been reported among the public. The district administration has been alerted, and officials are assessing the damage.
Fireworks manufacturing is a common industry in Virudhunagar district, which is known for its fireworks and matchbox production. Safety regulations are stringent, but accidents occasionally occur due to the volatile nature of the materials. This incident serves as a reminder of the need for constant vigilance and adherence to safety protocols.
