Ola Electric gets extended PLI window for cell manufacturing, unlocking ₹7,240 crore
Ola Electric Mobility Ltd. announced on Wednesday that the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) has approved revised timelines under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cells (ACC) for its wholly owned subsidiary, Ola Cell Technologies Pvt Ltd. The revision grants a five-year PLI window through CY2031 for the company's 20 GWh allocation.
According to a company statement, the approval extends the original timelines by two years and could enable Ola Electric to receive up to ₹7,240 crore in cumulative incentives under the scheme. Disbursements are expected to be made quarterly, starting from the next quarter, the company said.
Ola Electric currently has an installed cell-manufacturing capacity of 2.5 GWh, with an additional 3.5 GWh under installation. The company said it will reach 6 GWh by the end of the current quarter, which is ahead of the revised December 2026 timeline for meeting the initial installed-capacity milestone.
The company highlighted that lithium cells are becoming a foundational technology across electric mobility, energy storage, drones, robotics, and next-generation industrial systems. It said building these capabilities domestically would strengthen India's energy security and technology independence while fostering a globally competitive battery ecosystem.
Ola Electric is developing a multi-chemistry cell platform spanning NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) and LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) technologies. The company says its efforts include indigenous R&D, increased localisation of battery materials, improved manufacturing yield, and closed-loop material recovery.
Bhavish Aggarwal, Chairman and Managing Director of Ola Electric, said in a statement: "The revised timeline is more than an extension. It transforms the economics of our cell business by converting an earlier milestone overhang into a five-year, quarterly PLI opportunity of up to ₹7,240 crore." He added, "We hadn't factored any incentives into our business projections after overshooting the original timelines. Ola is now well ahead of the government's revised schedule, and enables us to access the full potential of ₹7,240 crore and receive disbursement as soon as next quarter."
The company also announced that at its annual Sankalp event on Independence Day, it will unveil its broader energy product roadmap, including Shakti, Mahashakti, and the next phase of its energy platform.
The PLI scheme for ACC was introduced by the central government to promote domestic manufacturing of advanced chemistry cells, which are key components in electric vehicles and energy storage systems. The revision of timelines for Ola Electric is part of the scheme's implementation, though details of the government's rationale were not disclosed in the announcement.
