Maharashtra FDA Chief Tukaram Mundhe Gets Standing Ovation in Pune Amid Food Safety Drive
Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Tukaram Haribhau Mundhe received a standing ovation at a public event in Pune this week, with video of the moment being widely shared on social media. Mundhe, one of the state's most recognisable IAS officers, was greeted with sustained applause as he walked on to the stage at Bal Gandharva Ranga Mandir.
The reception comes amid an ongoing crackdown by the Maharashtra FDA on food safety violations. Under Mundhe's leadership, the agency has conducted a series of inspections and suspended the licences of nearly 100 restaurants and food businesses in Mumbai and other parts of the state over hygiene and food safety concerns.
The enforcement drive has drawn public attention and national headlines. In the video from the Pune event, attendees can be seen rising from their seats as Mundhe approaches the stage, with many applauding and taking out their phones to capture the moment. The applause continues for several seconds as Mundhe acknowledges the crowd, reflecting the public support he has garnered following the FDA's recent actions. Such public displays of appreciation for a serving officer are relatively uncommon.
Mundhe's strict approach to enforcement has earned both praise and scrutiny. Social media users have largely welcomed the crackdown as a necessary step towards ensuring better hygiene and accountability in the food industry, while some critics have described his style as uncompromising.
Born into a farming family in Beed district, Mundhe grew up in financially modest circumstances. His father, Haribhau Mundhe, was a farmer, and his mother, Aasrabai Mundhe, managed the household. As a student at a Zilla Parishad school, he helped his family on the farm before and after classes. His journey from a rural background to a senior administrative position has been highlighted in multiple media profiles.
He later studied at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University in Aurangabad, and cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 2004 with an All India Rank of 20. He joined the Indian Administrative Service as a 2005-batch officer of the Maharashtra cadre.
Over the past two decades, Mundhe has held several key administrative positions, including assistant collector, district collector, municipal commissioner, and chairman and managing director of Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML). His postings have included Nanded, Washim, Jalna, Solapur, Navi Mumbai, Nashik, Nagpur, and Pune.
As Solapur collector, Mundhe was recognised for his work in water conservation and governance reforms, receiving the Maharashtra government's Best District Collector Award for 2015-16. He has also been referred to as the 'Waterman of Maharashtra'.
His career has also been marked by an unusually high number of transfers. Supporters view these transfers as a consequence of his strict adherence to rules and action against irregularities, while critics have argued that his approach has sometimes created friction. In over two decades of service, he has reportedly been transferred about 25 times.
