Kerala to Map Barren Lands, Push for Food Self-Sufficiency, Minister Announces
Kerala's Agriculture Minister T. Siddique has announced plans to introduce a marketing and business development division within the state's Agriculture department. The minister stated that discussions are ongoing to help farmers meet international standards and obtain necessary certifications.
In a move aimed at boosting food production, the government has directed the mapping of all government and privately owned barren land across the state. Once completed, the next target is to achieve self-sufficiency in food production. Additionally, cold chain blocks will be introduced to improve supply chain infrastructure.
As part of the Krishi Sakhi initiative, the government plans to map 300 women farmer groups initially. The scheme, which aims to enhance women's participation in agriculture and promote women-led agri-enterprises and farm collectives, is to be implemented over five years. A budget of ₹3.5 crore has been allocated for the scheme in the 2026-27 financial year.
The Agriculture department is also exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI), drones, and the Internet of Things (IoT) in the sector, including in pepper cultivation. This follows positive results from AI applications in agriculture in Andhra Pradesh.
Minister Siddique emphasized the importance of traditional farming methods and organic farming that avoids pesticides. In this regard, schemes such as 'Kathir' are being planned for educational institutions to promote these practices.
