BJP MP Manna Lal Rawat served notice for post he quit; official retracts after error

Jodhpur: In an administrative mix-up, a notice was issued to Member of Parliament Manna Lal Rawat for negligence in election duties, based on the mistaken assumption that he still held a government post he had resigned from nearly three years ago. The notice was issued on Thursday by the district election officer, who is also the chief executive officer of the Jodhpur zila parishad.

The notice warned Mr. Rawat of potential disciplinary action for failing to update the list of his subordinate employees on the state government's Employee Management System (EMS) portal, a requirement ahead of the upcoming municipal elections. However, Mr. Rawat, who is now the Lok Sabha member from Udaipur on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket, resigned from his position as joint commissioner in the state transport department in 2024 to contest the general elections.

According to Mr. Rawat, the district election officer, Ashish Kumar Mishra, called him after the mistake was pointed out on social media, admitted the error, and withdrew the notice. The mix-up occurred because a government portal had not been updated to reflect Mr. Rawat's resignation and subsequent election as a public representative.

Speaking about the incident, Mr. Rawat expressed surprise and concern. "It is surprising and worrisome," he said, noting that despite the government operating in a digital environment, election-related data still contained information that was nearly three years old. He questioned how government departments could maintain accurate records of citizens and serving employees if a retired senior officer's name remained on the list even after such a long time.

The incident has raised broader questions about the maintenance and updating of employee data by the state election machinery. Mr. Rawat's name continued to figure in the list of government employees maintained by the Jodhpur district election authorities, even though he had taken voluntary retirement and was elected to Parliament.

While the notice was swiftly retracted, the episode highlights potential gaps in the digital systems used for election preparation. Accurate and up-to-date records are essential for the smooth conduct of elections, and lapses such as this can lead to unnecessary confusion and reputational harm. The matter also underscores the need for periodic audits of government databases to ensure timely removal of retired or resigned officials from active lists.

Mr. Rawat, who now represents the Udaipur constituency, confirmed that the official personally apologised and acknowledged the mistake. The retraction came after the notice drew public ridicule on social media, prompting the district election officer to take immediate corrective action.

This incident serves as a reminder that even in an era of digital governance, human oversight and system updates require constant vigilance. For now, the administrative error has been corrected, but the questions it raises about data accuracy remain pertinent for election authorities across the country.
