Man accused of assaulting minor girl thrashed by public, hospitalised
The Kulithalai police on Friday admitted a 31-year-old man to the government hospital after he was beaten up by members of the public for allegedly sexually assaulting a four-year-old girl. The incident came to light after the victim’s grandmother reportedly attacked the man with a sickle and dragged him to the road to hand him over to the police.
According to sources, the alleged crime was committed about four days ago. When the family came to know of it, the grandmother took action. She reportedly attacked the offender and brought him to the main road, where passers-by and onlookers joined in and beat him up. The exact sequence of events is yet to be confirmed by the police.
On receiving information, police rushed to the spot and rescued the man. He was then admitted to the Government Hospital for treatment. His condition is reported to be stable, and he is under medical observation. Further inquiry is underway, the police said.
The incident raises serious questions about public vigilantism and the proper channel for reporting crimes. While the alleged offence against a minor is grave and punishable under law, taking the law into one’s own hands is not permissible. Legal experts point out that mob violence can lead to further legal complications and miscarriages of justice.
