Telangana extends age relaxation for uniformed services recruitment by two years

The Telangana government has further relaxed the upper age limit for direct recruitment to uniformed services by an additional two years, offering relief to unemployed youth aspiring to join the police and other departments. The decision comes in response to multiple representations from job seekers.

An official order issued by the General Administration (Services-A) Department on August 14 adds two years to the five-year relaxation already announced in May this year. Combined, the relaxation now stands at seven years beyond the prescribed upper age limit for eligible candidates.

The extended relaxation applies to direct recruitment in the Police, Fire, Prisons, Special Protection Force (SPF), Excise, Transport and Forest departments. These departments conduct periodic recruitment drives to fill vacancies in security and enforcement roles, which are critical for maintaining public safety and order.

The previous order, issued in May, had increased the upper age limit by five years for a period of one year, effective from May 18. The latest order extends this benefit further, allowing candidates who may have been ineligible under the earlier five-year window to now apply for these positions.

The government said it received several representations from unemployed youth seeking an extension of the upper age limit to enable them to participate in recruitment examinations. By accommodating these requests, the state aims to provide additional opportunities for candidates who have been preparing for competitive exams but were constrained by age requirements.

Officials familiar with the matter said the relaxation is a temporary measure intended to address the backlog of aspirants from various age groups. It is expected to benefit a large number of candidates who had either missed previous recruitment cycles or were awaiting a chance to apply. The order also reflects the government's broader efforts to prioritise employment generation and ensure equitable access to public sector jobs.

Recruitment to uniformed services in Telangana typically involves physical endurance tests, written examinations, and medical evaluations. The extended age limit gives aspirants a wider window to complete these stages without losing eligibility. Candidates are advised to check official notifications from respective departments for detailed eligibility criteria, application deadlines, and other requirements.

This is not the first time the state has addressed age-related concerns for uniformed services. Similar relaxations have been granted in the past to account for delays in recruitment cycles and to support unemployed youth. However, the government has not indicated whether a further extension will be provided after the current order expires.

The decision is seen as a significant step for thousands of job aspirants in Telangana, many of whom view uniformed services as stable and respectable career options. It also underscores the government's sensitivity to the challenges faced by youth in a competitive job market.
