Kerala Budget 2026-27: ₹243.80 Crore for Forests, New Measures Against Human-Wildlife Conflict

Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan presented the Revised Budget for 2026-27 on Friday, June 19, allocating ₹243.80 crore for forest and wildlife protection activities. The budget places a strong emphasis on addressing human-wildlife conflict in the state's hilly regions.

Acknowledging the threats faced by farmers and residents from wild animal attacks, Satheesan announced a scientific census of tigers and leopards in Kerala as part of mitigation measures. Legally permissible steps for their relocation will also be adopted.

The government plans to use modern technology to reduce human-wildlife conflict, with an allocation of ₹192.20 crore for this purpose. Additionally, more rapid response teams (RRTs) will be deployed in areas severely affected by wildlife threats.

An allocation of ₹22.02 crore has been made for various activities in the environment sector. The government has assured a 'zero tolerance' policy to prevent air, water, land, and light pollution in the state.

The budget also sets a target for Kerala to become completely carbon-neutral by 2050. Agricultural practices that increase soil carbon and carbon sequestration will be promoted. A state-level mechanism will be established to help farmers claim carbon credits and receive direct financial benefits.
