Karuppu Makers Express Gratitude After Rs 300 Crore Gross; Financier Reveals OTT Revenue Gap Caused 8-Month Delay
The production house behind the Tamil fantasy action film Karuppu, directed by RJ Balaji, has issued a formal note of gratitude following the film's strong theatrical performance. The film, which released on May 15 in Tamil and later in Telugu under the title Veerabhadrudu, has grossed over Rs 300 crore worldwide after 25 days in theaters, according to Dream Warrior Pictures.
In their statement, the makers described cinema as "a dream built through passion, perseverance, and belief," expressing thanks to the audiences and cinema lovers across the globe for embracing the film and making it a "resounding blockbuster success." The note acknowledged key financiers, including Jaswanth Bandari of Futura Finance and Tirupur Subramani of Sakthi Films, as well as industry bodies like the Tamil Film Active Producers Association. Distributors such as Sakthi Film Factory, Annapurna Studios, and Pen India Limited were also thanked, along with the media and film fraternity for their support during challenging times.
Special recognition was reserved for director RJ Balaji, with the producers stating the film's success would not have been possible without him, noting he "held the spirit and vibe of the film till date single-handedly." The cast, including Trisha Krishnan, Indrans, and Natty Subramaniam, and key technical crew like cinematographer G.K. Vishnu and music composer Sai Abhyankkar, were credited as integral to the film's achievement. The statement also remembered the late R.B. Choudary, a prominent producer and father of actor Suriya, and thanked Rajasekar Pandian of 2D Entertainment—Suriya's production house—for his "unwavering support and belief."
Karuppu tells the story of a guardian deity who takes the form of a lawyer to fight corruption within the legal system while assisting a young girl in need of a liver transplant. This blend of fantasy, social message, and strong performances resonated strongly with audiences, contributing to its commercial success.
Behind the celebratory tone, however, one of the film's financiers, Tiruppur Subramaniam, has shed light on the production's earlier difficulties. In an interview with Fine Time Cine, Subramaniam stated that the project faced a significant financial hurdle when expected revenue from over-the-top (OTT) platforms fell short by approximately Rs 45 crore. "SR Prabhu calculated that OTT would offer Rs 75 to 80 crore," he explained, "but they only gave Rs 30 crore, which resulted in a huge deficit and an eight-month delay." This gap pushed the film's release from its originally planned Diwali 2025 window into mid-2026.
Subramaniam gave credit to director RJ Balaji for not allowing the setback to affect the film's quality. The eventual box office performance appears to have validated the team's perseverance, with the film recovering from its pre-release financial strain to become one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of the year. The revelation offers a rare glimpse into the financial pressures faced by big-budget Indian cinema, where OTT licensing has become a crucial component of revenue estimation.
The makers' statement concluded with a message of collective effort: "With sincere gratitude to all our financiers, distributors, cast, crew and every individual who contributed to Karuppu/Veerabhadrudu. Thank you for your trust, support, and dedication."
