Karnataka retains top spot as foreign student enrolment surges 47% in a decade; Punjab overtakes Tamil Nadu
India's higher education sector has seen a significant increase in foreign student enrolments over the past decade, with a notable shift in the states hosting these students, according to the latest All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2023-24 released by the Ministry of Education.
The data shows that 58,134 foreign students from 173 countries were enrolled in Indian universities and colleges in the 2023-24 academic year, up from 39,517 students from 158 countries in 2013-14, marking a 47% rise over ten years.
Karnataka retained its position as India's leading destination for foreign students, hosting 7,914 international students in 2023-24. Punjab climbed to second place with 7,902 students, overtaking Tamil Nadu which dropped to fifth place. Maharashtra remained third with 6,190 students, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 5,953 students. Tamil Nadu hosted 5,694 foreign students.
Nepal continued to be the largest source country for foreign students in India, contributing the highest number of enrolments.
