At least 160 people have been confirmed dead and hundreds more are missing after catastrophic flooding on the Nepal-Tibet border unleashed waves of water and debris on Wednesday morning. The exact sequence of events remains unclear, but torrents of water and mud crashed downstream on both sides of the border, leaving a trail of destruction in villages and towns along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers.

Surveillance video from the Chinese side showed a wall of mud and water sweeping over a building as terrified residents fled. In Nepal, the sudden surge hit communities with little warning, destroying homes and infrastructure. Search and rescue operations are under way, with many areas still cut off.

Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, citing a preliminary analysis of Planet Labs satellite imagery, said in the evening that a rock-and-ice landslide along the Nepal-China border, about 20 km northeast of the Rasuwagadhi border crossing, caused a debris-laden flood in the Lhende River, a tributary of Bhotekoshi. The flood then flowed through Timure and entered the Trishuli River.

Earlier, Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal told Parliament that preliminary information suggested an earthquake around 8:37 a.m. triggered an ice avalanche, followed by the flood around 8:40 a.m. However, he noted that the information needed further verification. Experts say a thorough scientific assessment is required to establish the sequence of events and determine whether a glacial process also contributed to the disaster.

The disaster was initially described as a flood on the Nepalese side and a mudslide by Chinese authorities. With satellite analysis pointing to a landslide as the immediate cause, geologists and climate scientists are now examining whether glacial melt or other factors played a role. The Himalayas are highly susceptible to such events, and climate change is increasing the risk of glacial lake outburst floods and landslides.

This latest tragedy has reignited concerns among experts about disaster preparedness, infrastructure planning, and risk mitigation in Nepal’s mountainous regions. A construction spree along rivers in the country’s northern areas, driven in part by the government’s push to expand hydropower as an economic booster, has long been flagged by environmentalists and climate experts as a growing danger. Poorly planned projects and settlement patterns have put more people and assets in harm’s way.

The Nepalese government has announced relief measures and is coordinating with international agencies. However, the scale of the devastation underscores the need for improved early-warning systems, stricter building regulations, and comprehensive hazard mapping. As rescue teams continue to search for survivors, the focus is also turning to the longer-term challenge of building resilience against recurring extreme weather events in one of the world’s most fragile mountain environments.
