68-year-old worker killed in wild elephant attack in Kerala's Idukki
A 68-year-old cardamom plantation worker was killed in a wild elephant attack at Thalakkulam near Pooppara, under the Devikulam Forest Range near Munnar, on Thursday morning. The incident occurred around 9 a.m. on August 27, 2026.
The deceased has been identified as S. Ochappan, a resident of Bodinayakanur in Tamil Nadu. According to police, his daughter owns a cardamom plantation in Thalakkulam, and he had arrived there to inspect whether the crop was ready for harvest. While he was on the farm, a wild elephant suddenly attacked him.
He was rushed to the Government Medical College Hospital in Theni, but succumbed to his injuries on the way. His body was shifted to the hospital for a post-mortem examination. Ochappan is survived by his wife, Vijaya, and children Geetha, Selvaraj, and Rajesh.
Following the incident, the Thalakkulam stretch of the Munnar–Bodimettu route along the Kochi–Dhanushkodi National Highway witnessed protests by local residents demanding a permanent solution to the escalating human-wildlife conflict in Chinnakkanal.
Protesters alleged that after the man was injured, officials transported him via the Cumbummettu route instead of the direct Munnar–Bodimettu road upon learning that residents were planning a road blockade. The agitation lasted for over two hours before Munnar Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Abhay Yadav arrived at the scene and held talks with Udumbanchola MLA Senapathy Venu, after which the protest was called off.
Mr. Yadav said the Forest department handed over an initial compensation instalment of ₹5 lakh to the kin of the deceased on Thursday. “The Forest department had issued an alert around 8:30 a.m. on Thursday regarding the presence of an eight-member wild elephant herd in the Thalakkulam area. However, the farmer was accidentally trapped in front of the plantation, while other workers had a narrow escape. We suspect he may not have noticed the tusker’s presence due to heavy rain and dense fog,” the official said.
Mr. Venu said that during the meeting, the DFO agreed to deploy more personnel and intensify vigilance in the region. “The rapid response team (RRT) had issued alerts via SMS and WhatsApp messages. We suspect the victim either did not receive the alert or failed to see it in time,” said Mr. Venu.
Earlier on June 8, a 36-year-old woman identified as Mari was trampled to death by a wild elephant and her 11-year-old son was injured in Chinnakkanal, under the Devikulam forest range.
In a separate incident on Wednesday evening, a man narrowly escaped an elephant attack in Munnar town. The individual was sitting near the Mount Carmel Basilica when an elephant entered the area; he managed to flee to safety. The RRT from Pettimudy subsequently reached the spot and drove the animal away.
According to a recent study by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), the Munnar landscape recorded the highest number of human casualties from wild elephant attacks in Kerala, with 103 people losing life in such attacks in the last 18 years.
