Justice V. Mohana Honoured as First Tamil Nadu Woman Elevated Directly to Supreme Court
The Madras Bar Association (MBA) on Monday felicitated Justice V. Mohana, who became the first woman from Tamil Nadu to be elevated directly as a judge of the Supreme Court.
Justice Mohana also inaugurated the MBA Endowment Lecture Series, established in memory of four eminent lawyers: M.K. Nambyar, V.P. Raman, R. Krishnamoorthy, and M. Subramaniam. The event was held in the presence of Madras High Court Chief Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and other judges.
During her address, Justice Mohana highlighted the contributions of the four legal luminaries. She described M.K. Nambyar as an example of how a trial lawyer could rise to become a 'constitutional visionary', noting that the seeds of the Constitution's 'basic structure' doctrine were sown by him. Nambyar is the grandfather of Advocate-General Vijay Narayan.
Speaking about V.P. Raman, father of former Advocate-General P.S. Raman, Justice Mohana called him a 'brilliant lawyer' who still holds the record of being the youngest Advocate-General of Tamil Nadu and the first South Indian to be appointed as an Additional Solicitor General.
On R. Krishnamoorthy, she said he was the leader of the Bar and a well-known gentleman lawyer, who served as Advocate-General under two different governments. She noted that this rare honour is now seen again with the present Advocate-General, Vijay Narayan.
Justice Mohana hailed M. Subramaniam as a methodical man who passed on the values he learned from his senior Govind Swaminathan to his juniors. She expressed happiness that his son Arvind Subramaniam now practices at the Madras High Court.
MBA president V.R. Kamalanathan and secretary J. Pothiraj also spoke at the event.
