US Democratic Socialists Gain Ground with Key Primary Wins and New York Mayoral Victory

The political landscape in the United States is witnessing a notable shift as candidates aligned with democratic socialism secure significant victories in recent primary elections. These results come at a time when the Trump administration's foreign and domestic policies have sparked widespread debate and opposition.

In November 2025, Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor of New York City on a platform centred on decommodification, prioritising citizens' needs over market forces. He also openly described Israel's military action in Gaza as a genocide, a stance that sets him apart from mainstream political figures. His victory has been seen as a catalyst for a broader movement within the Democratic Party.

Following Mamdani's win, democratic socialist candidates have achieved success in state primaries. In Michigan's August 4 primary, Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive endorsed by Senator Bernie Sanders, won the Democratic nomination for the Senate despite significant opposition from pro-Israel advocacy groups. In Florida, Angie Nixon, a three-term state legislator and a recent member of the Democratic Socialists of America, secured the Democratic Senate nomination. Notably, her campaign spent only $60,000 on advertising compared to $2.2 million spent by her moderate opponent.

These wins are significant in a country where the term 'socialism' has historically been used to evoke fears of communism. However, the brand of democratic socialism endorsed by figures like Senator Bernie Sanders is closer to European social democracy than to state ownership of production. Sanders' presidential campaigns in 2016 and 2020 helped normalise these ideas, and lawmakers such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have demonstrated their electoral viability.

The new generation of democratic socialists has expanded its focus beyond traditional strongholds. Key policy priorities include affordable childcare, rent freezes, Medicare for All, and higher taxes on the wealthy. Additionally, they have broken with the Democratic Party's foreign policy consensus, particularly on funding Israel's military. This approach has resonated with many voters, indicating a shift in public sentiment.

Nevertheless, challenges lie ahead. Running against Republican candidates in the November general elections will be a far more difficult task, especially if the Democratic establishment does not fully support these insurgent candidates. Supporters, however, point to President Trump's low approval ratings and argue that a welfare-focused message could transcend the culture wars that Republicans are expected to emphasise.

For the Global South, including India, the rise of democratic socialism in the United States could be a welcome development. Its emphasis on fair trade, multilateral engagement, and ending endless wars aligns with the interests of many nations that have borne the brunt of US foreign policy interventions.

As the primary season continues, the ability of these candidates to translate primary victories into general election success remains to be seen. The coming months will reveal whether this movement can sustain its momentum and reshape American politics.
