June Pixel Drop Brings AI Video Creation, Multitasking, and Android 17 Update

Google has commenced the rollout of its June Pixel Drop, the latest feature update for Pixel smartphones and wearables. It arrives alongside the public availability of Android 17 and Wear OS 7 and will become accessible to eligible devices in stages over the next few weeks. This update brings a variety of new capabilities, including AI-driven video tools, enhanced multitasking, broader language support, and upgraded safety functions.

One of the standout additions is Screen Reactions, a feature exclusive to Pixel devices. Aimed at content creators, it allows users to superimpose a live selfie video feed directly onto screen recordings. This integration eliminates the need for external apps to achieve a picture-in-picture or green-screen effect. While recording, the selfie window can be moved and resized to suit the creator’s preference.

Google is further expanding its artificial intelligence toolkit under the Gemini brand. Pixel users can now generate and edit videos by typing natural language commands. The tool can create new video clips from text descriptions, remix existing photos and videos from the device’s gallery, and even build personalised AI avatars that mirror the user’s appearance. Another Gemini-powered feature enables music creation: by describing a musical concept or uploading an image, the system composes complete songs with lyrics, vocals, and customisable styles. These capabilities are designed to put sophisticated creative tools in the hands of everyday users.

On the productivity front, a new multitasking feature named Bubbles lets users convert any application into a floating window. When activated, the app condenses into a small bubble that stays on top of other apps, ready to be expanded into a resizable overlay. This allows simultaneous use of multiple applications, such as chatting while browsing. For foldable devices like the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, these bubbles can be stored in a specialised bar for quick retrieval, making task-switching more seamless.

Google is also extending features that were once limited to premium models to a wider audience. Voice Translate, which offers real-time speech-to-speech translation during phone calls, is now coming to the Pixel 10a. In preview mode, it supports conversations between English and several languages, including German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Hindi. Additionally, Quick Share on the Pixel 8a and Pixel 9a will now be compatible with Apple’s AirDrop protocol, simplifying file transfers between Android and iPhone devices.

Communication tools are seeing global expansion. Magic Cue, a contextual assistant that provides intelligent suggestions within conversations, will be integrated into Snapchat to help users with timely responses. Take a Message, a feature that transcribes voicemails in real time and offers AI-generated follow-up actions, is being rolled out to more countries. Users will also gain the ability to record custom outgoing voicemail greetings. For Indian users, Manual Call Screen becomes available on Pixel phones. This allows Google Assistant to pick up calls from unknown numbers and ask the caller to state their identity and purpose, giving the user the choice to accept or decline.

Safety enhancements are a significant part of this update. Pixel devices can now automatically detect severe incidents such as car crashes, hard falls, or a potential loss of pulse. When such an event is identified, the phone can notify designated emergency contacts. This feature operates in conjunction with existing emergency detection systems and can be tailored to individual preferences, providing an extra layer of personal security.

Finally, the AI-powered photo editing feature Edit with Ask Photos is being made available in more European markets. Powered by Gemini AI, it permits users to perform complex image adjustments—like removing reflections, correcting colours, and enhancing overall quality—simply by issuing a natural language request. This makes sophisticated photo editing accessible without technical expertise.

With this Pixel Drop, Google continues to weave AI into core experiences while improving device utility and safety. Users of supported Pixel phones and wearables can expect the update to arrive over-the-air in the coming days.
