Italy's Meloni denies 'begging' Trump for photo at G7 summit
The G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, France, has become the stage for a diplomatic disagreement between Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and US President Donald Trump.
During a phone interview with Italy's La7 TV channel, Trump claimed that Meloni had asked him for a photograph during the summit. 'She begged me to take a photo with her,' Trump said, adding that the Italian leader was 'probably happy' that he had spoken to her.
Meloni's office swiftly denied the claim. In a statement, a spokesperson said, 'Prime Minister Meloni has never begged anyone for anything. Italy conducts itself with dignity on the international stage. The claim is baseless and disrespectful.'
The exchange highlights a shift in what was once seen as a close working relationship between the two leaders. Meloni, who leads a right-wing government in Italy, had previously aligned with Trump on several policy issues.
The G7 grouping brings together the world's largest advanced economies to coordinate on global challenges. This year's summit included discussions on trade, climate change, and security.
Neither leader has made further public comments on the matter. Diplomatic observers note that such personal disputes can complicate international cooperation, though they often remain isolated incidents.
