Israeli Airstrike in Southern Lebanon Kills 7 Amid Fragile Truce
An Israeli airstrike on southern Lebanon killed seven people and wounded three others early Saturday (August 15, 2026), according to Lebanon's state-run National News Agency (NNA). The strike targeted a home on the edge of the village of Ansar, with paramedics reportedly still searching through rubble for possible additional casualties.
The attack is among the deadliest since a fragile truce between Israel and Hezbollah took effect on June 20. The two sides have remained in a state of war for nearly eight decades, though a framework agreement announced on June 26 outlined a plan for Israeli forces to withdraw from southern Lebanon in exchange for the disarmament of the Iran-backed Hezbollah group. That agreement also envisioned steps toward eventual peace negotiations between the two nations.
Hezbollah, which was not party to the deal, has refused direct talks and accused the Lebanese government of making excessive concessions without securing an Israeli withdrawal. The group has also declined to disarm, despite ongoing international pressure.
In addition to the strike in Ansar, NNA reported that intense Israeli airstrikes hit the strategic Ali Taher hill, which overlooks parts of the southern city of Nabatiyeh and key roads leading to it. Israel's military has continued almost daily attacks on areas north of the Litani River, a de facto boundary line, with large parts of southern Lebanon remaining under Israeli military control despite the truce.
The latest violence follows an earlier incident this month in which two Israeli soldiers were killed by an explosion in southern Lebanon — the first Israeli military deaths since the ceasefire began. Hezbollah did not comment on that blast.
Lebanon and Israel have held seven rounds of indirect talks, with the most recent occurring in Rome earlier in August. The negotiations have so far failed to resolve core disputes, including the pace of Israeli withdrawal and the disarmament of Hezbollah.
The current war between Israel and Hezbollah erupted on March 2, when Hezbollah fired rockets across the border two days after the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran. Since then, Israeli strikes have killed more than 4,000 people in Lebanon, including hundreds of civilians. On the Israeli side, about 40 soldiers and three civilians — one of them a military contractor — have lost their lives.
Saturday's strike has heightened concerns about the durability of the truce, as both sides continue to exchange fire despite the internationally brokered framework. The situation on the ground remains tense, with civilians in border areas facing daily risks and humanitarian conditions deteriorating.
