Indian Navy Warships Arrive in Vietnam for Strategic Maritime Partnership
As part of the Indian Navy's ongoing operational deployment, two indigenously designed warships—INS Udaygiri and INS Kavaratti—arrived at Nha Rong Port in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, on Monday, June 22, 2026. The visit marks a significant milestone in India-Vietnam maritime relations, coming just after the two nations elevated their ties to an Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in May 2026.
INS Udaygiri, a stealth frigate, and INS Kavaratti, an anti-submarine warfare corvette, are part of the Eastern Fleet under the command of Rear Admiral Alok Ananda, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet. The ships received a ceremonial welcome from personnel of the Vietnam People's Navy, representatives of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, and port authorities, reflecting the longstanding friendship and growing maritime partnership between the two countries.
During the port call, Indian and Vietnamese naval personnel will engage in professional interactions, including cross-deck visits, sporting events, and community outreach programmes. Senior-level discussions are also planned to address maritime security and strengthen bilateral naval cooperation.
This deployment is the Indian Navy's first major presence in Vietnam since the elevation of bilateral ties, underscoring India's commitment to deepening defence and maritime cooperation with Vietnam. It also highlights India's focus on enhancing stability, security, and collaboration in the Indo-Pacific region, consistent with its Act East policy and shared interests with ASEAN countries.
