IMD issues orange alert for Ernakulam, Thrissur; yellow for six other Kerala districts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Ernakulam and Thrissur districts in Kerala, warning of very heavy rainfall (115.6 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours) expected over the next 24 hours. An orange alert indicates that authorities should be prepared for adverse weather conditions, and the public is advised to stay updated and take necessary precautions.
Additionally, a yellow alert has been issued for six other districts: Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, and Kozhikode. A yellow alert signifies isolated heavy rainfall (64.5 mm to 115.5 mm) and urges people to be cautious while travelling and avoid flood-prone areas.
The IMD attributes the rainfall activity to a trough extending from north Tamil Nadu to Lakshadweep at a height of 3.1 km above mean sea level. This weather system is expected to sustain rainfall across the state for the next four days.
Residents in the affected areas are advised to remain vigilant, especially those living in low-lying or landslide-prone regions. Fishermen are cautioned against venturing into the sea during this period as squally weather is likely. Local authorities have been directed to keep emergency response teams on standby and ensure drainage systems are clear to prevent waterlogging.
The orange alert is the second-highest warning in IMD's colour-coded system, following red for extremely heavy rainfall. The system aims to provide early warnings to minimise risks to life and property. The public is encouraged to follow official advisories and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain.
Kerala has experienced intense monsoon rainfall in recent years, often leading to floods and landslides. The state government has implemented measures to improve disaster preparedness, including pre-positioning of rescue teams and equipment. However, the IMD urges continued caution as weather conditions can change rapidly.
