Gaza: Israeli Military Launches Criminal Probe into Death of Six-Year-Old Hind Rajab

The Israeli military has ordered a criminal investigation into the killing of six-year-old Hind Rajab in Gaza, a case that sparked international outrage after a harrowing audio recording of the child pleading for help was broadcast worldwide.

Hind was travelling with six family members in a vehicle in Gaza City in January 2024 when it came under Israeli fire. She initially survived the attack that killed several of her relatives, but her remains were recovered days later alongside her family members and two Palestine Red Crescent paramedics who had attempted to rescue her in an ambulance.

In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that “following a review of the findings” and “due to alleged failures in the coordination of the movement of the Palestine Red Crescent ambulance, it has been decided to initiate a criminal investigation of the incident by Military Police Criminal Investigation Division.”

The investigation marks a rare formal step by the Israeli military into an incident that has drawn widespread condemnation from human rights groups and the international community. The case became a symbol of the heavy toll of civilian casualties in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, now in its fourth month.

The audio recording of Hind’s desperate calls to emergency dispatchers, in which she could be heard saying she was afraid and that she was bleeding, moved many around the world. The two paramedics dispatched to save her — identified by the Palestine Red Crescent as Yousef Zeino and Ahmed al-Madhoun — were also killed, and their bodies were found alongside Hind’s a week later.

Palestinian officials have accused Israeli forces of deliberately targeting civilians and medical personnel, a charge Israel denies. The IDF has stated that it operates in accordance with international law and takes measures to avoid harming civilians. However, the decision to open a criminal investigation signals internal acknowledgment of potential failures in this specific incident.

The investigation will be conducted by the Military Police Criminal Investigation Division, which handles allegations of misconduct by Israeli soldiers. Its findings could lead to disciplinary actions or criminal charges if wrongdoing is established.

The case has also intensified debate over accountability in the conflict. International organisations, including the United Nations, have called for independent investigations into attacks on civilians and medical workers in Gaza. The Palestinian Red Crescent has said that more than 30 of its personnel have been killed since the conflict began.

Hind’s death has been widely referenced in protests and social media campaigns demanding an end to violence against children in Gaza. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, more than 10,000 children have been killed in the enclave since Israel’s military offensive began, following the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on 7 October 2023.

This investigation, while limited to a single incident, may set a precedent for how the Israeli military addresses claims of unlawful killings. It also underscores the growing international scrutiny of the conduct of both parties in the conflict. The IDF has not provided a timeline for the investigation’s completion.

As the conflict continues, the memory of Hind Rajab — a child whose final moments were heard by millions — serves as a reminder of the human cost of war. Her family and the paramedics who tried to save her are among the many victims whose stories remain at the centre of calls for justice and accountability.

Trump's NATO Summit exit: Three-plane switch amid reported Iranian threat

U.S. President Donald Trump left the NATO Summit in Türkiye using a complex three-aircraft switch after intelligence reported a credible Iranian threat and a man with a shoulder-fired missile. The elaborate security measure involved a Qatar-donated Boeing 747-8, an older VC-25A, and a smaller C-32A, with a stopover in the U.K. to further confuse potential threats.
