FSSAI Issues 9 Notices to Swiggy Instamart Over Spoiled, Expired Food Complaints
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued nine notices to Swiggy Instamart, the quick-commerce arm of Swiggy, following multiple consumer complaints. The regulator announced the action on Saturday, July 11, 2026, via a social media post on X.
The complaints allege violations under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, including the supply of expired, spoiled, rotten, contaminated, and otherwise unsafe food products. One complaint involved an infant food formulation found in a highly deteriorated and unsafe condition, with signs of contamination and improper storage. Even after the product was returned, it was reportedly re-supplied.
Other complaints included delivery of contaminated eggs and milk, as well as damaged packaged food items. The FSSAI also noted incorrect, invalid, or non-existent FSSAI licence numbers on the platform. Some food business entities were listed under names different from those on their FSSAI registration.
The regulator highlighted that some consumers did not receive satisfactory responses or corrective actions after lodging complaints, with some only being offered refunds without addressing underlying safety concerns.
FSSAI has directed Swiggy Instamart to submit a detailed explanation and compliance report. Failure to comply will result in appropriate legal action. The notices raise concerns about seller onboarding, compliance verification, traceability, food quality monitoring, grievance redressal, and overall food safety systems.
This action is part of a broader crackdown by FSSAI on food business operators, including energy drink makers, alcoholic beverage companies, and other quick-commerce platforms. The regulator has been increasingly using social media to publicize its enforcement actions.
