Four Inmates Escape Chhattisgarh Observation Home After Killing Watchman
Four inmates, originally sent to a government-run observation home in Bilaspur as juveniles, have been accused of murdering a watchman and escaping early Monday morning, police said. The incident occurred at around 2 am at the facility in the Sarkanda area, where the watchman, Narendra Kumar Khande, 40, was the sole security staff among ten employees.
According to police, the four men, now aged between 18 and 20, had been housed at the home for several years after being brought there in connection with criminal cases. The home currently holds about 50 inmates. Police believe the attack was pre-planned. The suspects are said to have waited until other inmates were asleep, then gagged Khande with cloth, tied his hands and legs, and strangled him to death.
After the murder, the four allegedly stole scooters belonging to staff members and fled the premises. A police official stated that there were no other security guards on duty at the time. Authorities have launched a search operation to locate the suspects and are investigating how the escape was possible despite the facility's security measures.
The observation home is intended for juveniles in conflict with the law, typically those under 18. However, inmates who turn 18 before their case is resolved may remain in such facilities under certain provisions. The incident raises questions about security protocols and the supervision of older inmates in juvenile homes.
Bilaspur police have registered a case of murder and escape from lawful custody. Further details are awaited as the investigation continues.
