Four Indians Killed in Black Sea Ship Strike; Russia Says in Touch with India
Russia has stated it is maintaining communication with Indian authorities following the deaths of four Indian nationals in a missile strike on a merchant vessel in the Black Sea near Ukraine. The incident occurred on Sunday when the cargo ship 'Golden Leo', flying the flag of Guinea-Bissau and carrying corn, was hit by three cruise missiles off the southern port of Odesa, according to Ukrainian officials. Ten people were killed in the attack, including four Indians and several Syrian crew members.
On Tuesday, India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed the deaths and said one Indian crew member was hospitalised in critical condition. The MEA also confirmed that India's ambassador to Russia had summoned the Russian chargé d'affaires in New Delhi to convey strong condemnation of the attack. The ministry issued a statement calling the strike on commercial shipping and civilian seafarers unacceptable, and reiterated that targeting vessels engaged in legitimate trade endangers freedom of navigation and international commerce.
Among the deceased is 26-year-old merchant navy officer Akhil Joyan from Vellarikkundu in Kerala's Kasaragod district. According to family members, the shipping company informed them of his death via email on Monday. Akhil had recently returned home on leave, gotten engaged, and resumed duty only a month ago.
The Russian government has not directly commented on the specific incident but said it remains in contact with its partners in New Delhi. The attack comes amid ongoing hostilities in the Black Sea region, where both Russia and Ukraine have targeted shipping. India, which has maintained a neutral stance on the conflict and continued diplomatic ties with Russia, has called for restraint and the protection of civilian lives.
The MEA's statement read: 'As per the information available, four Indian nationals have tragically lost their lives, while one is hospitalised in a critical condition. Our mission in Ukraine is closely monitoring the situation and is making every effort to extend all possible assistance to those affected.' The government also urged all parties to avoid such actions that disrupt international trade and endanger seafarers.
This incident underscores the risks faced by civilian crews in conflict zones. India has repeatedly called for the safety of merchant vessels and adherence to international maritime law. The Indian embassy in Ukraine is providing support to the injured crew member and coordinating with Ukrainian authorities for the repatriation of the deceased.
