Flash Floods in Jammu and Kashmir Bury Machinery at Hydro Project, Block National Highway
Heavy rainfall triggered flash floods in the Kishtwar and Doda districts of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, causing damage to an under-construction hydroelectric project and blocking a major highway. The floods, which originated in the upper reaches after overnight rain, carried mud, rocks, and boulders downstream.
The floodwaters struck the 540 MW Kwar Hydroelectric Project in Kishtwar, specifically the Tail Race Tunnel area. Several heavy vehicles, including dumpers, trucks, and excavators parked at the site, were buried under debris. Visuals from the location showed only tips of tippers and excavator arms protruding from the mud. Officials confirmed that no casualties or injuries were reported.
The Kwar project, being developed on the Chenab River, is one of several hydropower projects under construction in the region. Project authorities have initiated debris clearance operations using multiple excavators and loaders to recover the buried machinery and restore normalcy.
Additionally, the Doda-Kishtwar stretch of National Highway 244 was blocked near Prem Nagar in Doda after debris from the floods covered the road. Some roadside-parked vehicles were also buried. National Highways authorities and the district administration have deployed men and machinery to clear the highway. Commuters have been advised to avoid the route until it is reopened.
Authorities are monitoring the situation across the Chenab Valley and have urged people to stay away from rivers, streams, and construction sites during heavy rain as restoration work continues.
