Flash Flood at Maharashtra Waterfall: Over 100 Rescued
More than 100 tourists were rescued on Saturday after a sudden flash flood near the popular Zenith Waterfall in Khopoli, Raigad district, Maharashtra. The rescue operation, lasting nearly three hours, was carried out by local villagers, the Khopoli Fire Brigade, and police personnel.
Heavy rainfall in the surrounding hills caused the river near the waterfall to swell rapidly, trapping visitors at two different locations. Many had crossed the river to reach the opposite side of the falls, unaware of the rising water levels. The weekend had drawn large crowds to the area, with hundreds enjoying the monsoon scenery.
Rescue teams worked swiftly to evacuate those stranded, bringing them to safety without any reported injuries or casualties. A video of the rescue operation shared on social media captured the efforts of the responders, highlighting the coordination between local authorities and residents.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier warned of possible flash floods in several locations across the state due to continuous heavy rain. Authorities advised visitors to exercise caution during the monsoon season and avoid venturing into risky areas near rivers and waterfalls.
This incident underscores the dangers of flash floods in hilly regions during heavy rainfall. Officials urge tourists to stay informed about weather warnings and follow safety guidelines to prevent such emergencies.
