Ferry Fire in Indonesia: One Confirmed Dead, 172 Rescued

Indonesian authorities have confirmed that one person died and 172 others were rescued after a ferry caught fire in the Lombok Strait on Wednesday morning. The vessel, KM Putri Yasmin, was travelling from the port of Padangbai in Bali to Lembar in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, when the incident occurred at approximately 4:39 a.m. local time (2039 GMT Tuesday).

Muhammad Hariyadi, head of the local rescue agency, told Reuters that by Wednesday afternoon, 172 people had been evacuated to ports in Bali and Lombok. Among the survivors, one is an Australian national; the remainder are Indonesian. The dead passenger was also Indonesian, Hariyadi said, without providing further details.

Rescue teams deployed multiple boats to assist in the evacuation, coordinating with other vessels in the vicinity. More than 200 personnel have been involved in the operation, Hariyadi added. Search efforts are continuing to determine whether anyone remains unaccounted for.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Authorities have not stated whether overcrowding played a role. Earlier, Heri Wiyanto, an official at Padangbai port, said the ferry's manifest listed 114 passengers and 17 crew members. It remains unclear how many people were actually on board, a discrepancy that has prompted concerns given Indonesia's history of ferry accidents.

This incident follows a similar tragedy less than a month ago, when another ferry, KM Mutiara Sentosa 2, caught fire off Madura Island, resulting in five deaths. That vessel was reportedly carrying more passengers than its manifest indicated. Safety analysts have repeatedly flagged inadequate enforcement of maritime regulations in Indonesia, where ferry travel is a critical mode of transport across the archipelago of more than 17,000 islands.

The Lombok Strait, separating the popular tourist island of Bali from Lombok, is a busy shipping lane. Ferries operate frequently between the two islands, carrying both passengers and cargo. While sea travel is often more affordable and accessible than air travel, safety standards have historically been inconsistent, leading to a relatively high rate of accidents.

Authorities have said they will provide further updates as the investigation progresses. The rescue agency has assured the public that operations will continue until every individual is accounted for. In the meantime, questions are likely to be raised about the accuracy of passenger manifests and the adequacy of safety measures on ferries operating in Indonesian waters.
