EC announces Rs 6,000 honorarium for BLOs, supervisors in voter list revision
The Election Commission of India has sanctioned a one-time honorarium of Rs 6,000 for Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and supervisors involved in the Special Summary Revision (SIR) process of electoral rolls. The decision aims to acknowledge the efforts of polling staff who work intensively during the revision period to ensure accurate and updated voter lists.
The SIR process, conducted annually, involves verification and correction of electoral rolls. BLOs and supervisors play a crucial role in door-to-door verification, addressing claims and objections, and updating voter data. The honorarium is a token of appreciation for their dedication, especially given the logistical challenges in remote and urban areas alike.
According to an EC official, the payment will be made to eligible personnel who have completed the assigned tasks satisfactorily. The disbursement is expected to be processed through state machinery. This move is part of the EC's broader efforts to motivate field staff and enhance the efficiency of electoral roll management.
Political parties have welcomed the step, noting that BLOs often work under pressure with limited resources. However, some have called for more structural improvements in the revision process. The EC has assured that it will continue to review the working conditions of election staff.
The honorarium applies to all states and union territories where the SIR process is underway. The Commission has urged strict adherence to timelines and guidelines to ensure error-free voter lists for future elections.
