Congress to field young, clean-image candidates for Srikakulam local body polls

The Srikakulam District Congress Committee president, Sanapala Annaji Rao, said on Thursday that the party high command would prefer young candidates with a clean image while selecting contestants for the upcoming local body elections.

Speaking at a programme organised at Indira Vignan Bhavan, Mr. Rao said that the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president, Y.S. Sharmila Reddy, had appointed a new team for the district with the aim of bringing young members into the party's organisational structure. He handed over appointment letters to 27 members of the new team, including vice-presidents, general secretaries, secretaries, and executive body members.

Mr. Rao urged the newly appointed office-bearers to conduct field studies and identify issues that affect the people ahead of the local body elections. He said this would help the party understand the ground-level problems and formulate its approach for the polls. He also said that the induction of young members would enable the party to better connect with voters, especially the youth.

One of the newly appointed secretaries, Pudi Kiran Kumar, said that voters were increasingly inclined towards the Congress because of the growing appeal of Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. He also referred to Mr. Gandhi's 'Chhatron Ki Goonj' initiative, stating that it helped the party identify the aspirations and concerns of the younger generation.

Local body elections in Andhra Pradesh are held for rural and urban local bodies, including panchayats and municipalities. These bodies are responsible for basic civic infrastructure such as water supply, sanitation, and road maintenance. In the Indian political system, local body elections are critical for strengthening democratic institutions at the grassroots level, as they provide citizens with a direct say in governance.

The appointment of the new district team is part of a broader reorganisation exercise by the PCC to rejuvenate the party's structure in Andhra Pradesh. The 'Chhatron Ki Goonj' initiative, mentioned by Mr. Kiran Kumar, is a student outreach programme launched by Rahul Gandhi. It aims to connect with students and hear their concerns, with the feedback being used by the Congress party to shape its policies. The initiative reflects the party's focus on engaging with the younger demographic.

Political observers note that the emphasis on young candidates with a clean image is a strategy by the Congress party to present a fresh leadership. However, the final selection of candidates for the local body elections will be made by the party's high command, as stated by Mr. Rao.

The local body elections are expected to be held in the coming months, though an official schedule has not been announced. In the meantime, political parties are preparing their campaign strategies. The Congress district unit is likely to shortlist candidates after receiving inputs from the field studies conducted by the new team.
