Delhi's first women-only police station opens in North district to handle crimes against women
Delhi has inaugurated its first police station exclusively for handling crimes against women and children, with Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu officially opening the facility in North Delhi's Sabzi Mandi on Friday.
The police station, notified on May 25, will have jurisdiction over the entire North district. A female inspector has been appointed as the Station House Officer, and the station will have a staff strength of 58, including 38 women officers. The existing Crime Against Women (CAW) Cell of the district has been merged into this new facility.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golchha, Special Commissioners of Police, senior officers, members of Resident Welfare Associations, and eminent women leaders. The Lieutenant Governor described the initiative as a step towards providing a safe, accessible, and victim-centric policing environment for women and children.
This move aligns with broader efforts to improve police responsiveness to gender-based crimes and to create a more supportive environment for victims to report incidents. The dedicated station aims to reduce trauma for complainants and ensure specialized handling of sensitive cases.
Officials noted that the station is equipped with facilities designed to make victims feel comfortable, including private counselling rooms and women-friendly infrastructure. The staff has been trained in gender-sensitive handling of cases.
