Delhi Unveils 7-Year, Rs 8,300 Crore Air Pollution Plan with World Bank Backing

The Delhi government has formulated a comprehensive seven-year plan to mitigate air pollution in the capital, with an estimated budget of Rs 8,300 crore. The initiative, named 'Swachh Hawa, Swasth Delhi' (Clean Air, Healthy Delhi), aims to accelerate the implementation of air quality management measures and reduce emissions from key sources such as vehicles, road dust, and construction and demolition waste.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the plan on Friday, stating that it seeks to advance the objectives of the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) launched by the central government in 2019. The plan is also aligned with the broader vision of 'Viksit Bharat 2047', which envisions a developed India by that year.

According to Gupta, the project will be implemented between September 2025 and August 2033, with financial support from the World Bank. The World Bank will provide 65% of the funding, while the Delhi government will cover the remaining 35%. This partnership marks a significant international collaboration to address one of the most pressing environmental challenges in the region.

The plan focuses on strengthening air quality management systems, promoting cleaner technologies, and enforcing stricter emission norms. Specific measures include upgrading public transport infrastructure, promoting electric vehicles, and enhancing waste management practices to reduce pollution from construction sites.

Delhi has consistently ranked among the most polluted cities in the world, with severe health impacts on its residents. The new plan is expected to bring tangible improvements in air quality, contributing to better public health outcomes and environmental sustainability.
