Delhi Math Teacher Arrested for Aiding Gang in Extortion of Businessman
New Delhi: The Delhi Police Special Cell has arrested a 35-year-old mathematics teacher from Mukherjee Nagar for allegedly assisting the Lawrence Bishnoi gang in an extortion plot. The accused, Amit Bishnoi, also known as Rudra Pratap Singh, is accused of conducting reconnaissance of a businessman's office and sharing videos and location details with gang members.
According to police, Amit passed the information to Harry Boxer, a key associate of Lawrence Bishnoi, who then used it to threaten the businessman and demand Rs 10 crore in extortion. The threats began on June 15 via WhatsApp calls from international numbers, with the caller warning that the businessman and his children would be killed if the payment was not made.
The victim filed a complaint on July 8, leading to an FIR registered at Mukherjee Nagar Police Station. The investigation was later transferred to a Special Cell team. Amit was arrested on July 9.
Amit, a B.Tech graduate from Hisar, Haryana, had been living in Delhi since 2018 and worked at coaching institutes in Mukherjee Nagar, teaching students for competitive exams like the Combined Defence Services (CDS) and Staff Selection Commission (SSC). He had also prepared for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examinations. Police said he came in contact with Lawrence Bishnoi in 2014 through a common acquaintance and later established links with Harry Boxer.
During interrogation, Amit claimed he helped the gang out of friendship with Lawrence. However, investigators are skeptical and believe he may have expected a share of the extortion money or had been promised financial assistance. Police are checking visitor records at prisons to determine if Amit had visited Lawrence in custody.
The arrest highlights a common modus operandi of the gang, which often recruits young men to conduct surveillance on wealthy businessmen in the Delhi-NCR region for extortion targets.
