Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' Opens Strong: Rs 17.4 Crore in India, $17.6 Million in US Previews

Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated IMAX epic The Odyssey, an adaptation of Homer's ancient Greek poem, was released in theatres on Friday. The film features an ensemble cast including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Tom Holland and Zendaya.

According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film earned an estimated Rs 17.4 crore net in India on its opening day, with a gross collection of Rs 20.76 crore.

Internationally, the film also started strongly. Universal Pictures reported $17.6 million from Thursday night previews in North America, according to Deadline. This marks the biggest preview opening of the year so far, surpassing the $17.5 million preview haul of Toy Story 5. For context, Nolan's earlier film Oppenheimer, which won several Oscars, earned $10.5 million in previews when it released in 2023.

Deadline further reported that The Odyssey is expected to collect around $50 million from Friday and preview screenings, leading to a projected $117 million opening weekend in North America. If these projections hold, it would be the third-biggest domestic opening of Nolan's career, after The Dark Knight Rises ($160.8 million) and The Dark Knight ($158.4 million).
