Centre Names New Directors for Police Research, Crime Records Bureau, and National Police Academy

The central government on Monday announced key appointments in three major police organisations. Alok Kumar Mittal, a 1993 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Haryana cadre, has been appointed as the Director General of the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD).

Mittal, currently serving as Director General of Prisons in Haryana, will head BPRD until June 2029 or until further orders. He has previously served in the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and led investigations into several major terror cases. His appointment comes at a time when BPRD is overseeing the implementation of three new criminal laws across states and Union Territories.

Amit Garg, a 1993 batch IPS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, has been appointed as Director of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). He will move from his current position as Director of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) in Hyderabad. Garg will serve as NCRB chief until his retirement on October 31, 2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier. He replaces incumbent Alok Ranjan.

Sujeet Pandey, a 1994 batch IPS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, will take over as Director of SVPNPA. Pandey's term will continue until his superannuation on July 31, 2028.
