CBI Books Former IRS Officer for Amassing Assets Worth ₹23 Crore Beyond Known Income
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a disproportionate assets case against N. Rengaraj, a former Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer who retired as Chief Commissioner of Income Tax.
The case alleges that during his tenure as Principal Commissioner of Income Tax in Coimbatore between 2020 and 2024, Rengaraj acquired assets significantly exceeding his legitimate sources of income.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), Mr. Rengaraj constructed a farmhouse and purchased land valued at ₹16 crore for real estate development. The total value of assets held in his name and that of his family members is estimated at ₹23 crore, which the CBI claims is disproportionate to his known income.
Disproportionate assets cases are filed under the Prevention of Corruption Act, which makes it an offence for a public servant to possess assets disproportionate to their known sources of income unless they can satisfactorily account for them. The burden of proof in such cases lies with the accused.
The CBI stated that the investigation is at a preliminary stage. Mr. Rengaraj has not yet been arrested, and the case is based on a complaint and subsequent verification of assets. As with any legal proceeding, the former officer is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
This case highlights the ongoing efforts by investigative agencies to check corruption among public officials. It also underscores the importance of the legal principle that public servants must maintain transparency in their financial dealings.
The CBI will now conduct a detailed investigation to ascertain the sources of income and the validity of the explanations provided by the accused. Further developments are awaited as the case proceeds through the legal system.
