Behind the Glamour: The Turbulent Marriage of Guru Dutt and Geeta Dutt
Guru Dutt and Geeta Dutt were one of Indian cinema's most celebrated couples, but their marriage was marked by professional disparity, personal friction, and allegations of violence. While the director found his muse in actress Waheeda Rehman, his relationship with his wife, singer Geeta Dutt, deteriorated over time.
According to accounts, Geeta once confronted Guru Dutt about his rumoured affair with Waheeda Rehman, and it is reported that he physically struck her during the argument. This incident was part of a broader pattern of marital strife that ultimately led to their separation.
Geeta was a established singer when she met Guru Dutt, who was still a struggling director. She would visit his family often, and his sister Lalita Lajmi recalled, 'We all loved her. Lovely, wonderful Bengali lady. She used to come in a big car but she was very humble.'
However, their different career stages created tension. Guru Dutt's mother Vasanthi Padukone later said, 'Somehow, I had an intuition that their marriage would never be a happy one. Firstly, in those days, she earned in thousands whereas Guru Dutt's income was limited. Secondly, both were stubborn and would never yield to one another.'
Guru Dutt disapproved of Geeta's social circle and her drinking, though he himself drank. 'Guru Dutt could not tolerate women drinking heavily. In certain ways he was old-fashioned,' his mother said. He also wanted Geeta to sing only for his films, effectively trying to curb her independent career.
The couple had two sons before their separation. Despite attempts at reconciliation, the marriage never recovered. Geeta's career declined, while Guru Dutt's continued to flourish. Their story remains a poignant chapter in Indian cinema history, illustrating the costs of fame and the complexity of love.
