Bangladesh, India Appoint New High Commissioners as Ties Enter New Phase

Bangladesh is set to appoint its current Foreign Secretary, Asad Alam Siam, as the next High Commissioner to India, replacing Riaz Hamidullah. Siam, who has been foreign secretary since June 2025, previously served as Bangladesh's ambassador to Washington under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. Hamidullah is expected to become Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva.

Siam, a career diplomat who joined the Bangladesh Foreign Service in 1995, brings extensive experience to one of Bangladesh's most important diplomatic postings. His appointment comes as Bangladesh-India relations navigate a transitional phase marked by both cooperation and scrutiny.

India has also appointed a new High Commissioner to Bangladesh: Dinesh Trivedi, a senior politician from West Bengal who has served as Union Minister for Railways and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare. Trivedi arrived in Bangladesh via the Benapole-Petrapole land border on June 12, succeeding Pranay Kumar Verma, who served as Indian High Commissioner for four years.

The diplomatic reshuffle occurs against a backdrop of shifting dynamics. Bangladesh's recent agreements with China, including the Teesta master plan and Mongla Port redevelopment, have drawn attention in New Delhi, with some observers viewing them as a sign of Dhaka's growing ties with Beijing. However, both nations continue to engage on trade, security, and regional cooperation.

In other diplomatic moves, Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the UN in New York, is likely to become the next foreign secretary. Meanwhile, former Amnesty International chief Irene Zubaida Khan has been appointed as Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the UN in New York. Khan, a well-known human rights advocate and former UN Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Opinion and Expression, has also worked as a consulting editor for the Daily Star. She studied at Manchester University and Harvard Law School, and is related to Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Tarique Rahman through marriage.

These appointments signal a strategic realignment as both countries seek to manage their relationship amid regional and global changes. The new envoys will play key roles in sustaining dialogue and cooperation on issues ranging from border management to economic partnerships.

Haryana Can Set Higher Job Qualifications Than UGC Minimum, High Court Rules

The Punjab and Haryana High Court ruled that Haryana can prescribe higher qualifications than UGC minimums for assistant professor posts. The court dismissed a petition by an unsuccessful candidate, stating that employers have the prerogative to recruit the best talent. However, the matter has been referred to a larger bench due to a potential conflict with an earlier judgment.
