Palaniswami demands compensation for Cauvery delta farmers hit by rains
CHENNAI: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami has urged the Tamil Nadu government, led by the TVK, to conduct a thorough assessment of crop damage caused by recent rains in the Cauvery delta region and provide compensation to affected farmers.
In a statement issued on Sunday (August 23, 2026), Mr. Palaniswami cited reports indicating that standing crops across approximately 2,000 acres have been affected in Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, and other districts of the delta region. He emphasised that these rains have adversely impacted the livelihoods of farmers who depend on agriculture in this area.
The former Chief Minister called upon the State government to depute officials from the Revenue and Agriculture Departments to visit the affected villages, inspect the fields, and ascertain the exact extent of crop loss. He urged that this assessment be completed expeditiously so that compensation could be disbursed without delay.
Mr. Palaniswami also recommended a compensation amount of ₹30,000 per acre for the affected farmers. He argued that such support is essential to help them recover from the financial losses and prepare for the upcoming cropping season.
The Cauvery delta region, often described as the rice bowl of Tamil Nadu, is highly dependent on the monsoon. Any disruption in rainfall patterns can have a significant impact on paddy cultivation, which is the primary crop grown here. Farmers in this region have previously faced similar challenges, and timely government intervention has been crucial in mitigating their distress.
The demand comes at a time when the State government is already dealing with the aftermath of the rains, including waterlogging and damage to infrastructure. Officials have yet to respond to Mr. Palaniswami's request, and it remains unclear whether a survey will be initiated in the coming days.
Political observers note that such demands are common during the monsoon season, especially in agriculture-dependent regions. However, the effectiveness of the government's response will be judged by the speed and transparency of the assessment process, as well as the adequacy of the compensation provided.
Farmers' associations in the delta districts have also expressed concern over the delay in any official commutation. They have urged both the State and Central governments to act swiftly to prevent further hardship.
The AIADMK, which has historically drawn support from agrarian communities, has made this issue a priority. Mr. Palaniswami's intervention is likely to intensify pressure on the ruling party to announce a relief package at the earliest.
As the situation evolves, all eyes will be on the State administration to ensure that affected farmers receive the necessary support without bureaucratic hurdles.
